Norfolk State University – Norfolk, VA

The project scope included the Space Planning and furniture selection and Interior Design services for informal collaborative study spaces for Graduate Students at two locations on the Norfolk State campus.

The first space is located in the McDemmond Center for Applied Research. Here, the design team provided a large open lounge, a small conference/meeting room, and a separate Administrative office. The second collaborative study room is located in the Lyman Beecher Brooks Library. This large open room allows for different activity spaces, including four-top tables for studying, soft seating for lounging, and booths for more private discussions.

Design services included programming interviews, schematic design and design development, and successive iterations of the selected concept. The Interior Design team provided the University staff and faculty with plan layouts and 3D views of the space and a complete furniture package, including textiles, color selections, and finishes.

Decoys Seafood – Suffolk, VA

Decoys Seafood Restaurant, a privately owned restaurant and marina, sits on the property formerly known as Bennett’s Creek Marina, along the James River in Suffolk, VA. In addition to the restaurant, the development includes the Blind Duck Tiki Bar, Bennett’s Creek Marina, the Ships Store, a small swimming pool, and two luxury waterfront cottages for short-term stays. The design process included a series of short design “charrettes” with the clients and other stakeholders, including the managers, chefs, and kitchen equipment providers. Throughout the project, emphasis was placed on maximizing the use of the natural beauty of the waterfront site. For example, when preparing the site for construction, some of the existing timber was harvested and preserved for later use in the restaurant and tiki bar.

govSolutions, Inc. Offices and Showroom – Virginia Beach, VA

The building was awarded the 2016 HRACRE Award of Excellence for Best Commercial/Retail Building: “The jury liked the angularity of the front of the structure, with its pushed-in entry way, as well as the building’s expressive use of simple metal siding and underlying structural grid.”

Using the standard materials supplied by the building manufacturer, the designers selected different colors, textures and orientation to create visual interest and variety. This approach also helped keep the total project budget in line with the owner’s expectations.

The building, with a modern industrial look, atypical of standard pre-engineered buildings, serves as the perfect representation of the furniture lines and typical projects of this woman owned furniture distributor and Class A builder owner.
